  • Medium chemical peels: Trichloroacetic acid is the most used chemical in medium chemical peels. This can remove the top and middle layers of the skin. It is effective for people who have damaged skin cells.
  • Deep chemical peels: Deep chemical peels are used to penetrate the deeper layers of the dermis. Deep peels use phenol or trichloroacetic acid to remove the damaged skin cells. Deep chemical peels will have long-lasting effects and you do not need to repeat them.

Preparing for Chemical Peels

Before performing chemical peels, you will have an initial appointment with the dermatologist. To determine the right treatment for you, the dermatologist will review your medical history and will also perform a physical examination. The dermatologist also explains about the process, and will clear any questions you may have.

The dermatologist may recommend the following before having chemicals peels:

  • If you have a history of fever blisters or cold sores, then you should take antiviral medication
  • Use special lotions a few weeks before your treatment to improve the treatment 
  • Use of retinoid cream for faster healing and to avoid darkening of skin following the treatment
  • Avoid exposure to the sun before the treatment
  • Avoid waxing, epilating, and hair-drying treatments a week before the procedure

How Are Chemical Peels Performed?

Chemical peel procedure can be performed in the office or on an outpatient basis. Before performing the procedure, the dermatologist will thoroughly clean your skin. Your face will be covered with gauze, tape or, ointments. If you are having light chemical peels, then you do not need any pain relief. For medium chemical peels, you will be given a sedative and painkiller. If you are having deep chemical peels, you will be sedated to numb the area to be treated.

Based on the type of chemical peel to be performed, the dermatologist applies one or more chemical solutions at the treatment site. Once the chemical solution is applied, you may feel warm to hot sensation for a few minutes. The chemical peel is left on the skin for a few minutes. After that, the chemical peel is washed using a neutralizing solution. New skin growth takes place which is smooth and gives you a youthful appearance.
